Lorelai Darlene Gail
On the Morning of January 13th, I had a biophysical scan to determine if it was still safe for me to birth our baby at home. This was my first to term pregnancy after a long line of infertility. I had a ton of anxiety but tried to reassure myself that we were okay and I was just overthinking. I was 40 weeks and 3 days. Surely you can’t risk out of home birth that late in the game, RIGHT? 1pm finally rolled around and we walked into my midwifes office. Immediately I knew we were getting bad news so I quickly excused myself to the bathroom for a quick cry and pee since we were already in there. Sure enough upon my return, we risked out of care and were being transferred to our local hospital for an induction. I was hysterical the entire way home to grab our bags. Luckily the hospital didn’t keep us and we got to go have one more night with our baby boy, Bentley who was now 27 months old!! Bright and early the next day we headed in for our induction. It was quite the transition from our planned spiritual all natural home birth, but we found ways to adjust. we spent most of this day watching Shameless and snacking. That night, contractions really picked up and became hard. All of labor was in my back and I just couldn’t get comfortable. Finally around 3pm while doing a check, my nurse broke my water and I was a solid 6cm. I growled at my husband to call my midwife because I was by definition in labor now. Soon after her arrival I opted for an epidural because coping went out the door. I was a solid 8cm and chilling. We chatted for a while and then she was called away to another birth. I took a much needed nap and then was woken up to my whole team coming in ready to push. I asked for a mirror and if I could catch my own baby. A shocking 45 minutes later, with a highly effective epidural and a sunny side up baby, I caught my rainbow baby and brought her to my chest at 1:16am on 1/16/21! It wasn’t my planned home birth- but it was the birth of my beautiful Lorelai!
And yesss I named her after Gilmore Girls!! I can’t wait until she is older and we can binge watch it together!
